3 Reasons to Teach Your Children a Foreign Language

I've always loved learning and teaching languages ever since I was a young girl. To me, learning a foreign language is fun and so rewarding. Here are the main three reasons why I'm teaching my children to learn Spanish and French.

1. Age - Learning a foreign language when you are young is so much easier than when you are an adult or even in college. My children soak up the language like a sponge. Many researchers believe that you learn the ability to learn a foreign language after puberty, especially native-like pronunciation. So, now is the time to start teaching your children a foreign language.

2. Bonding - Even if you don't know a foreign language yourself, you can learn along with your son. Pick a foreign language that you find useful or that interests you and run with it. Having this special time with you toddlers or young children will help you to bond together as a family.

3. Expanding their mind - As youngesters, they rarely think or understand what is happening around the world or even that there are people out there who don't speak English. While you teach them a foreign language you can teach them about the different cultures and countries of the people who speak that language. You can cook new food together and have a great time learning about new and exciting things!

Learning Colors in Spanish - One Meal at a Time

Are you just starting teaching your children their colors in Spanish? Why not have a whole meal in the color you are trying to teach them? That way during the meal you can repeat the name of the color in Spanish lots of times.

For example:
Orange - mandarin oranges, carrots, mac & cheese, cantelope, pimento cheese
Green - salad, bell peppers, zuchini squash, green beans
Red - red peppers, cherries, strawberries, strawberry ice cream, red beans
Yellow - corn, yellow butter bread, pinapples, bananas, noodles with a yellow cream sauce
Blue - blueberries (okay you'd probably have to cheat on this on and use some food dye)

Spanish Calendar - April 2011

I trying to make these earlier than I have in the past, so that people can print them out and use them. If you're like me you procrastinate, so doing this a few weeks early gives you a little procrastinate time built in! :) I really find it useful to have these calendars on the fridge for the kids. They get to read the days of the weeks in Spanish every time they look at it, which is often!

St. Patrick's Day Worksheet - Spanish

Here's a cute little shamrock worksheet I made for my daughter to help her practice her numbers in Spanish and French. It goes up to 17 in honor of St. Patrick's Day. If you want to have your child work on their handwriting at the same time, they can write the number of each shamrock as they count them in Spanish.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Using Music to Help Teach Children Spanish

I found a website that I just love and I wanted to share it with you all. It's called Mama Lisa's World. It has great Spanish music from all over the world. This link will take you to the music of South America. I love this site because it has the words in English and Spanish and it also has MP3 files of the songs. All of these together make for easy, fun learning. Here's a song from Costa Rica that I thought was really cute. You can even make rice pudding together before or after you learn the song. It would make for a great lesson.

Arroz con leche

Arroz con leche
Me quiero casar
Con una señorita
De la capital
Que sepa barrer
Que sepa limpiar
Que sepa abrir la puerta
Para ir a jugar
Yo soy la viudita
Del barrio del rey
Me quiero casar
Y no sé con quien
Con ésta sí
Con ésta no
Con esta señorita
Me caso yo
Cásate conmigo
Yo te daré
Zapatos y medias color café.

Rice Pudding

Rice Pudding,
I want to marry,
A lady
From the capital,
Who knows how to sweep,
Who knows how to clean,
Who knows how to open the door
To go play.
I'm the little widow,
From the king's borough,
I want to get married
And I don't know with whom.
With this one yes,
With this one no,
With this young lady
I'll be wed.
Marry me
I will give you
Coffee colored shoes and stockings.

Family Members in Spanish

Here's a worksheet to help practice family member vocabulary in Spanish. If your child can read, they can read the words themselves and then draw a picture of their family member. If they can't read, you can read it to them and they can repeat you. Then, they can draw the picture. Try to have them repeat the family member word in Spanish as they are drawing.

Spanish Family Member Vocabulary:

la madre - mother

el padre - father

la hermana - sister

el hermano - brother

yo mismo (o at the end for a boy; a at the end for a girl) - myself

Another Easter Worksheet to teach Spanish Numbers

Hi everyone! This is a pretty simple easy Spanish worksheet to use with kids from about 3 until 6 (or so, depending on the child of course). Have your child find 0 and then say the number's name in Spanish. Then, they can color the egg and draw a line to the bunny. They continue like this counting upward until they reach 10.

You can make variations as well by having your children cut and paste the eggs around the bunny or other scenarios like that.

I hope you like it!

Practicing Numbers in Spanish while Making an Easter Bunny

Here's an easy Easter activity that you can do with your children while practicing Spanish. All you need is some construction paper, glue and cotton balls, then you can improvise with whatever else you have and make a bunny. If you'd like detailed instructions, you can go here.

As your child glues the cotton balls onto the bunny shape, they can practice counting in Spanish. Also, if you want to practice counting more, you can have them dip each cotton ball into paint before starting to glue and that way they can practice counting as well as their colors.

Happy Easter!

Using Old Board Book to Teach Vocabulary Words in Spanish

Remember all of those old board books and picture books you read to your children when they were 1 to 2 years old? Break them out and put them to use again.

Lots of picture books have themes that you can use for your own Spanish lessons. Perhaps you can find one for shapes, colors, opposites, etc. And then make a lesson with that book as the basis.

If you are learning Spanish along with your child, you can have a little cheat sheet with the words in Spanish. They'll never know and if they do know, they won't care.

I think having your children see the pictures as they learn new words will help them to remember the words more. And you will put those old books to good use again!

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes in Spanish

A great way to teach your children their body parts in Spanish is to teach them a song that they already know in English, but teach them in Spanish. Here are the lyrics to Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. Make sure they point to their body parts as they sing the song. This will help them to remember the words. (Please note, they use feet instead of toes because of the rhythm of the song.)

Cabeza, hombros, rodillas, pies, rodillas, pies
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas, pies, rodillas, pies

Ojos, oidos, boca, y nariz
Cabeza, hombros, rodillas,pies, rodillas, pies

Easter Activity for Learning Spanish

Since today is Fat Tuesday, I thought it would be appropriate to have an Easter activity to teach your child Spanish.

Print out the Easter Basket I found on another site. Write out the names of the different colors in Spanish on each egg. Then, use the other worksheet I made of eggs. Have your children color those eggs and cut them out. Then, they can paste the correct egg on the correct egg in the basket. If they are not yet reading, you can read the word to them.
In order to print out the pages, just double click on the picture and it will bring put it in another window where you can print it out.

Have fun!
